Disabled Facilities

There are good facilities for the disabled at all the international airport terminals in the Canaries. But that is also the end of the good news! Lanzarote Airport is well equipped for disabled people. Disabled facilities include ramps, accessible doors and toilets, designated areas outside Departures and Arrivals lounges where disabled passengers can be dropped-off or picked-up. There are also designated car parking spaces for disabled travellers.

Throughout the rest of the island, facilities are lacking or do not exist at all. There are hardly any adapted toilets and you won't find disabled friendly hire cars (maybe a few automatic ones) or public transport. When planning a visit to the islands, disabled tourists should check the travel conditions and hotel facilities with their travel agent prior to any booking. The organization, which helps disabled people to plan their holiday on the Canary Islands, is the Confederación Coordinatora Estatal de Minusválidos Físicos de España (COCEMFE) – the Spanish association for the disabled.

The British based Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation (RADAR) publishes a guide called 'Holidays & Travel Abroad: A Guide for Disabled People'. It includes info on Spain and the Canary Islands with plenty of contact details (tel: 0171 250 3222).
