Lanzarote Facts
The sun-kissed island of Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands and has a population of around 140,000. It is of volcanic origin, has extravagant rock formations, 213km of coastline, over 16km of beach, striking mountain ranges, the tallest of which - Peñas del Chache - is 670m above sea level.
During the late 14th century there were several European expeditions to the island following Lanzarote’s first appearance on a European map in 1339. During the early 1700s the island was hit by a series of volcanic eruptions and droughts that forced many of its inhabitants to emigrate. These eruptions and consequent lava flows changed the landscape of the island dramatically. The last known volcanic eruption is believed to have been in 1824 and although it destroyed so much, not one life was claimed. Lanzarote has literally risen from the ashes and today is firmly one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
Spanish, specifically Castilian, is the language of the island, although the accent and dialect is similar to that of Latin America. Religion remains part of the culture with most people following the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, although it’s believed less than half of the population actually attends Sunday service.
