Leisure Activities in Lanzarote
Blessed with excellent weather conditions all year round, Lanzarote is the perfect location for the practice of all kinds of outdoor leisure and sports activities in winter and summer alike.
On land, the best way to get away from it all and to explore Lanzarote’s natural beauties is by walking, cycling or riding. For walkers, the island offers great opportunities on fixed senderos (meaning footpaths), established by the Cabildo Insular (Island Government) according to the Plan de senderos (meaning ‘Footpaths Plan’) to promote rural tourism on the island. These footpaths include newly created and several ancient paths that the early inhabitants once used to get around. Also for cycling and riding exist a series of defined routes and trails for fans of these sports to enjoy their outings to the full extent without risking any personal damage because of the often rough and inhospitable terrain.
Due to Lanzarote’s volcanic history, resulting in the formation of many lava caves and tubes, speleology is another activity that attracts many visitors with this special interest to the island.
At present, golf lovers will find only one golf course on the island. It is an 18-hole course that is located at the tourist resort of Costa Teguise. A second golf course is already in construction (in Puerto del Carmen) and another one is currently in the planning stage (in Yaiza).
The Atlantic, its winds, warm water temperatures and well-developed infrastructures provide excellent conditions for the practice of all kinds of water sports on all the islands of the Canary archipelago. Lanzarote’s surrounding waters are considered some of the clearest and warmest, ideal for swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling, especially on the south coast where the sea is calmer, also favouring all kinds of marine excursions including game fishing trips. Due to rougher sea conditions and stronger winds, the north coast is very popular with locals and visitors alike for surfing, sailing, windsurfing and powerboat racing.
Things often change when you get to see them from a different perspective. If you think Lanzarote is already quite impressive to experience on the ground, then wait until you get to see it from a ‘bird’s eye view’ when for example practicing paragliding or hang-gliding on offer with several companies on the island.
The La Santa village on the north coast is home to the large sporting complex Club La Santa, where professionals and amateurs find everything for a holiday based around sports. In winter, the professional sports elite trains in this sports centre, which provides coaching and training facilities for 64 Olympic disciplines and even boasts an Olympic pool and an athletics stadium as well as an artificial lagoon for beginners’ courses in windsurfing.
It is also in La Santa where, around May/June each year, the highly rated ‘Lanzarote Ironman’ is carried out which is often described as the ‘Hawaii of Europe’ because of its awe-inspiring beauty.
