Los Jameos del Agua
A huge sculpture of a lobster in front of the entrance is welcoming the visitors to the amazing Jameos del Agua, the main attraction in the north-eastern part of the island. Just a short walk from the sea, this ‘natural wonder’ consisting of caverns and partially collapsed tubes, was turned by César Manrique into a complex of unique entertainment venues in the late 1960’s.
Spiral wooden stairs wind down to an extraordinary underground restaurant with a bar and dance floor that changes three times a week into a popular evening venue with dining and dancing in spectacular surroundings below sea level.
The visitors’ route leads into a huge cave 62 m (203 ft) long, 19 m (62 ft) wide and 21 m (70 ft) high featuring a mysterious salt lake with transparent waters connected to the ocean. This lake’s only inhabitants are tiny, blind albino crabs of unknown origin and the bed being below sea level its water level rises and falls with the tide. The signs prohibiting coins to be thrown into the lake should be respected, as the corroding metal causes the death of the minuscule crabs. Another stylish bar, with its tables arranged on little terraces, lies at the far end of the lake.
From here meandering paths guide you up to a contrasting world of lush plants, including palms and bougainvilleas, skilfully set around Jameo Grande, a picturesque, man-made, emerald green pool with irregular shapes and whitewashed surrounds. At the far end it opens to an underground auditorium with 550 seats, frequently used for concerts, shows and meetings, a unique setting famous for its outstanding acoustics.
Some more steps zigzag upwards from the pool to the top, where you will find a terrace with a café and the Casa de los Volcanes, a small scientific museum with an interesting exhibition on volcanism.
The Jameos del Agua is a truly awe-inspiring place! Take your time and immerse in the fantasy atmosphere of this stunning place!
