Masdache

Leaving the town of Tías in the north, we continue on a minor road until we reach our next point of interest, the village of Masdache, still belonging to the municipality of Tías. This road passes through a mountainous terrain, flanked by Montaña Blanca (596 m – 1955 ft) in the east and by Montaña Tersa (508 m – 1,670 ft) and Montaña Testeyna (439 m – 1,440 ft) in the west.

On the road to Uga, shortly before the western entrance to the village, you will see Manrique’s Monumento al Pájaro Grifo, marking the turn to the Bodega el Grifo, this region’s major sightseeing attraction for everybody who is interested in the winemaking. Founded in 1775, El Grifo is the oldest of Lanzarote’s bodegas and it is widely accepted as the one, which is producing the best wines on the island. It boasts a small museum dedicated to the history of winemaking, where you will see old presses, bottling machinery, laboratory material and – all those who are not driving – can also sample the fine wines on offer, which have won many awards. The Bodega el Grifo is open for visits daily from 10.30 to 18.00 hrs (no entrance fee).

Also known for its good wines is the Bodega El Campesino, the second wine-producing factory of this village, which apart from its bodegas has no other interesting sights to offer.
