Located in a fertile valley, surrounded by the Guatisea and the Mina mountains in the middle of Lanzarote, San Bartolomé is the agricultural centre of the island. Among the many crops grown here are sweet potatoes, watermelons and pumpkins. San Bartolomé is also well known for its fine bakery and pastry shop, which is said to be the best on the island!

With a predominance of white, black and green and that simple, clear style that César Manrique liked so much, this appealing little country town boasts some fine examples of traditional Canarian architecture. This includes Casa Perdomo, a splendid 18th Century building which accommodates the Museo Etnográfico Tanit (a museum dedicated to the island’s unique folk culture), a tiny chapel and a beautiful courtyard and garden.

There are comprehensive displays of agricultural tools, household utensils, musical instruments, paintings, photos, wine production equipment, furniture, clothing, religious artefacts and much more.

Opening hours are Monday to Saturday between 10.00 and 14.00 hours. Entrance is free.

In San Bartolome’s centre you will find a large, stylish square, where you can see the late 18th Century parish church of San Bartolome, the ayuntamiento (town hall) and the appealingly restored Teatro Municipal next to it.
