Tiagua

Continuing north, our next stop is the small village of Tiagua, where, at the crossroads, you will find a plain, yet appealing 18th-century chapel, the Ermita de la Virgen de Perpetuo featuring in its interior some interesting artworks, including a priceless silver lamp.

This otherwise modest village boasts the biggest visitors' attraction of this area, the excellent and award-winning Museo Agrícola El Patio, an open-air museum, which offers comprehensive insight into Lanzarote’s intriguing, ingenious and unusual agricultural traditions.

This in 1994 immaculately restored traditional farm dates back to around 1845 when a group of impoverished farmers started to work this fertile land. In the early 20th century, this was the biggest and best-run estate on the island, but by the second half of the same century, many workers left this rural area to take up more attractive jobs in tourism, which by that time had started to pick up on the archipelago.

To the right side of this museum complex, you will find the old manor house where you can wander around the rooms and out into the grape press, bodega and grain store. There is also a wine museum, a small chapel and a garden featuring cacti and other endemic plants. Various animals, including chickens, donkeys and dromedaries are kept in the courtyard.

Two carefully renovated windmills, where you can step inside and learn how corn was ground into gofio, dominate the buildings of the left-hand side of the courtyard, which form the main agricultural museum. The exhibitions comprise vast displays of traditional agricultural tools, harnesses, ancient ceramics, fine examples of plait work, folk costumes and a collection of original photographs reflecting scenes of the hard-working rural life on Lanzarote.

To round off your visit of this pleasant and very informative museum, have a taste of the locally produced wine and the traditionally made goat cheese!

Opening hours are from Monday to Friday 10.00 – 17.30 hrs and on Saturdays from 10.00 – 14.30 hrs.
