Speleology
Speleology, the exploration of an underground world with caves and tunnels, is not for everybody but those who are attracted to this activity find their perfect playground in Lanzarote.
Due to Lanzarote’s long volcanic history, many caverns and lava tubes were formed by the lava flows and underground gas inflations, the most famous of which are the Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua as well as the Túnel de la Atlantida, one 7.5 km long lava tube, one of the longest in the world – all located in the north-eastern Lanzarote – but there are many more to explore also in other parts of the island.
About 1.5 km (nearly 1 mile) of the Atlantida tunnel are running underwater, and it was here where the world record in underwater speleology has been set up. The early inhabitants used these caverns – often part of a complex cave system – as hiding places to find shelter from invading pirates.
If you are fascinated by the underground world, you have got a great opportunity to satisfy your curiosity in Lanzarote! Don’t miss it!
