Lanzarote’s second largest town, Tías, is a short distance away from the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen on the south-east coast. Home to around 11,000 people, it is a quiet and tranquil place with some beautiful architecture which is in keeping with the environment.

An interesting point about this lovely little community is that it was home to acclaimed Portuguese author and Nobel Prize awarded José Saramago, who lived here with his wife before his death in June 2010.

The historic monument of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, which has a peculiar double bell tower, can be found in the centre of town and is the focus point of activities every February during religious celebrations.

In addition, Tías boasts some typical Canarian bars and restaurants, which are great places to sample some traditional food and get a sense of real Lanzarote culture.
